Eradicating pollution has been a major task on the to-do list of environmentalists and go-green enthusiasts since the dawn of industrialization. It has been a constant in the equation that represents development and global warming.

The situation has been so intense that even the Badarpur thermal power station had to be shut down and its operations had to be stopped. The decision was inevitable as the air quality of the city has entered the alleged ‘red zone’. This simply implies that the air quality in the capital city is nothing short of dangerous. Reports also state that inhaling Delhi’s air is close to smoking 50 cigarettes a day. Now, that is huge! No wonder the Delhi authorities have decided to ban diesel generators. Yes! Delhi has banned the use of diesel generators till March 2018. This decision was the need of the hour and was a must in order to secure the cities future. The city’s pollution control department, that is, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee is given the responsibility to oversee that the order is carried out.

But the question that bothers the intelligent mind is that whether the generator ban in Delhi was the need of the hour or was it just an obligation to show the people of Delhi that the acting authorities are in fact doing their job. This question raises further questions on the city’s authorities. Only a few weeks ago, the Supreme Court of India, the apex judicial institution in the whole country imposed a ban on firecrackers for the festival of Diwali. The decision was seen as an attack on the Hindu religion for some reason by many intellectuals. The decision was then replicated by many High Courts in various states. The decision of diesel generator ban in Delhi has raised eyebrows as well. Although it is very obvious that this step would eventually prove to be fruitful, people know that it will be a bit of a hurdle as most of the offices, workshop, showrooms, and small-scale businesses rely on diesel generators for running their operations. Business owners and shopkeepers are sure to face difficulties in the near future due to this step. Of course, the issues can be tackled by the use of power inverters. Various power solutions companies have power inverters that have the capability to support all the operations. But can we really blame anyone but ourselves?

The entire situation has been a result of years and years of human activities, natural exploitation, and resource mismanagement. There are other factors as well such as human error, carelessness, and utter ignorance. As human beings, we want all the better things in life, but we would not spare our own luxury at any cost. The decision of generator ban in Delhi is in many ways a result of our own deeds. Be it deforestation, be it industrialization, be it carelessness, or be it random acts of ignorance, everything has led to this day, that is, the diesel generator ban in Delhi.

The Supreme Court of India gave the responsibility to the EPCA to make sure that the Graded Response Action Plan or the GRAP is correctly and justly implemented. As far as the state government is concerned, many government schools and offices have been shut till the pollution clears. The Delhi government also announced that it will be implementing the odd-even rule from Monday onwards. The results of these actions are yet to be seen but one thing is for sure that the fruits will ripen soon and that too for the better.

The generator ban in Delhi also allows us to introspect and figure what went wrong along the way. Was it our way of working, our attitude towards gravely important matters in life, or was it just the fact that we have come way too far to reverse the effects of our deeds. As far as the decision of diesel generator ban in Delhi is concerned, the actions taken by the decisive authorities were without any doubt the need of the hour.
